What does lip filler do & why do people use lip filler?

How much lip filler do you need?
It depends on the individual and their goals. Since every person is different and will want different looks with their filler, the amount is customized to fit their needs.
“I take a conservative approach and typically start with 1 syringe of dermal filler (1mL) for the lips, which most patients are happy with. If a patient requires more for their desired appearance, this can be done over a series of appointments.”
Does lip filler hurt?
“There is pain, but it is temporary. Most patients tolerate lip filler fine.”
But if it’s truly a concern, a topical numbing cream can be used along with ice to numb the area and reduce the risk of bruising. Most dermal fillers also contain lidocaine, a numbing medication, so after the initial injection the treatment is fairly comfortable.
Is lip filler safe?
Lip filler has a low risk of complications when treatment is administered by a trained practitioner in a medical setting.
“Although rare, the most serious risk with dermal filler is a vascular occlusion, which happens when blood supply is blocked off due to the filler being injected into an artery, which is why going to a qualified injector is important so the complication can be recognized and treated immediately.”
According to The Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology, less than 0.05% of filler injections result in vascular occlusion. In my three years of injecting, I have never experienced a vascular occlusion, but I am trained on assessing for and treating one should it occur.
What can I expect after lip filler has been injected?
The most common complications from lip filler are bruising and swelling. You can expect some degree of swelling in your lips after the procedure and occasionally some bruising. Keeping your head elevated and icing intermittently can help with swelling.
Are there things you can’t do immediately after the injection?
After lip filler injections, you should keep your head elevated and avoid touching or manipulating the treatment area for the 1st day (including kissing, drinking with a straw and applying products), avoid exercise for 24 hours and avoid blood thinning medications (Aspirin, Excedrin, ibuprofen, Advil, Aleve) for 48 hours.
How long will lip filler last?
The short answer is anywhere from 6-12 months. Longevity depends on the product used and how quickly the patient metabolizes it.

“On average, expect to spend around $700 for 1 syringe of lip filler. The cost depends on the product used, which is a decision you and your provider can make together depending on your treatment goals.”

“I recommend inquiring about their experience and training. Your injector should be a trained medical professional who has experience in aesthetic procedures and continues to keep up with advancements in their training.”
