Is Your Skincare Regimen Right For Your Skin? Learn What Makes The Difference

When it comes to our skincare routine, we can often fall victim to just using whatever it is we started with, but not taking the time to understand if what we’re putting on our faces every day is actually making a difference or improving its appearance.

So many of us grab a skincare product from the shelf, something we saw in an ad or on TV, without knowing if it’ll truly do the job for our unique skin type. And that’s not to mention the fact that most of the time, we get it wrong. Because we’re not professionals, we just go with what we think is best, though the truth is, not many average people know what their skin needs—much less if something over the counter can get the job done.

Here to answer some questions about skincare routines and our new line of medical-grade Apex Skincare, is our own Medical Director, Dr. Shannon McKeen.

Why is it important to have a good skincare routine?

A good skin care routine is important for several reasons. First of all, the skin is the largest organ of the body and a good routine can help keep it healthy.

“It can also help prevent and repair damage from the sun, in turn helping to prevent skin cancer and aging of the skin (fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation, etc),” Dr. McKeen says. “Finding the right skin care routine for you can get you looking and feeling healthier in your own skin, which is a great feeling.

What is the difference between medical-grade skincare and over the counter skincare?

There are several differences between medical-grade skincare and over the counter products, some of which include scientific research as well as quality and concentration of the active ingredients.

Medical-grade skin care products are formulated to target specific medical conditions and concerns (such as sun protection, anti-aging, pigmentation, acne, etc.). In comparison to over-the-counter products, medical-grade skin care products have the purest form and a higher concentration of the active ingredient.

This allows for greater penetration of the product and increased efficacy. Medical-grade skin care products are regulated by the FDA and backed by scientific research.

How do I know which skincare products to choose?

Choosing a particular skin care product, or building a skin care regimen, can be quite overwhelming. The numerous products sold over the counter, as well as products advertised on television and social media, can cause confusion over which products to purchase.

“When choosing skin care products, or building a regimen, it is always best to consult with a skin care specialist. They are trained to pick the appropriate products for your skin type and address your specific concerns,” Dr. McKeen advises.

What works for someone else, may not be the best choice for you. At Apex, we are trained to evaluate your skin and help select products that are best for you and your skin.

What are some of your favorite products in the new line?

Dr. McKeen shares, “I feel it is important that every regimen have a good cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen. The new Apex line has a green tea cleanser and tinted sun shield that I love.”

There are also several moisturizers in the new line that have antioxidants and restore the skin barrier. I always add a Vitamin C serum into my regimen, it is an antioxidant that decreases free radical damage and helps with pigmentation.

Another product that I favor is the perfect retinol serum. My skin is very sensitive and cannot tolerate many products with retinol or retinoids, however my skin is able to tolerate this product well. The retinol serum is elegant and allows me to get additional anti-aging benefits without the irritability that I get from many other retinols.

I am really excited about the new Apex line because has a diverse selection of medical-grade products that target a wide-range of patient concerns, so there is something for everyone.  In addition, these products are high quality and cost effective for our patients.
