Mayfield Heights, OH May 12, 2020 – Dr. Gregory Delost of Apex Dermatology in Mayfield Heights has co-authored a new publication on psoriasis, aggregating worldwide data from 1990 to 2017 to provide actionable findings on the common skin disease.
Psoriasis burden peaks between ages 60 and 70, is even between men and women, and is more prevalent in high income countries.
A correlation between psoriasis prevalence and comorbidities is seen with cardiovascular disease, mental health, type 2 diabetes, stroke, Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, non-melanoma skin cancer, and inflammatory bowel disease.
Dr. Delost summarizes, “The prevalence of psoriasis continues to increase, and it is the second largest contributor to skin-related disability. This article is exciting because we show these trends on a global, regional, and national scale. We, as dermatologists, can reduce the global burden of psoriasis through adequate treatment, screening for comorbidities, and providing appropriate specialist referrals.”
