Acne scars can make you feel self-conscious about the way you look long after you’ve conquered acne. Fortunately, dermatologists offer a variety of treatments that will eliminate the scars or make them less noticeable. Jorge Garcia-Zuazaga, M.D.; Tracy Ringo, D.O.; Brian Moore, M.D.; and Amy Polster, M.D.; your Cleveland dermatologists, share information about six treatment options for acne scarring.
Chemical peels are a good treatment option for shallow to deep acne scars, depending on the strength of the peel. Your dermatologist applies the liquid peel solution to your face, which causes the top layers of your skin to blister and peel during the next week to two weeks. After these layers peel off, new, smoother skin forms. Several treatments may be needed for best results.
As the name implies, dermal fillers plump up depressed acne scars. Once the area is filled, scars are less noticeable. You may need to repeat the procedure several years after the first injections to maintain your results.
Punch excision is a good option if you have deep ice pick scars. During treatment, your skin doctor uses a sharp round tool to remove the scar, then places a skin graft over the area to fill it. A new scar may form after the punch excision treatment, but it will be smaller and less noticeable than your acne scar.
Microdermabrasion treatment sands away the outer layers of your skin with a fine spray of microcrystals. It’s very effective for shallow acne scars.
Like dermabrasion, microdermabrasion, and chemical peels, laser treatment removes the top layers of skin, but also breaks up and softens scar tissue and stimulates collagen production.
